1. Auto Watering Wick Cord: This is a very easy and economical method and can be installed by yourself without any problem. Just need to understand the concept behind it before installing it.
In this method, a hydroponic wick is used to water the plants through the capillary action of water.
A glass or container of water is placed near the planter and a wick of hydroponic material is dipped in it as shown in the figure. The second end of the wick is put in the soil of the plant.
The hydroponic wick sucks the water from the pot through capillary action and transfers it to the soil of the pot.
This is a simple mechanism, but we need to take care that the water is not to be placed above the soil height, otherwise with the effect of gravity, the plant will get overwatered.
You can use cotton or jute wick also, but it would be best to use a wick designed especially for this purpose. The hydroponic wick is made of material that is durable, absorbs more water, and does not stink or bio-degrade as is the case with jute or cotton wick. These can be adjusted to 0-60 drops per second depending on the requirement of the plant.
These spikes have universal sizes for bottle fittings. You can fit these spikes into used cold drink bottles or water bottles. If these are not fitting to a particular bottle, try changing the bottle.
You can fill the bottle with water and dig the spike with the bottle into the soil. Then adjust the flow of water depending on the weather and requirement of plants.
You can buy these spikes from amazon by clicking here or on the picture.
3. Self Watering Pots: Another good solution is to use self-watering pots. These pots have a separate water reservoir at the bottom of the planter. The water rises through the mesh at the bottom of the planter using the capillary action of the soil.
You can also use a hydroponic wick fixed through the bottom of the planter. This wick sucks the water through the capillary action and keeps the soil moist to the required level.
One added advantage of self-watering pots is that there is no seepage in rooms due to overwatering. The bottom reservoir will store the extra water.
These planters come in a 4-inch size that is suitable for most indoor plants. For bigger plants, you can use bigger planters.

This method is very useful for agricultural farming where there is a scarcity of water. At our home also we can use this method to keep our plants growing without much effort to water them every day.
