While purchasing an air conditioner, most people are in the dilemma of making a choice between split AC and Window AC. Some people go by the looks only and ignore the utility part of it. Let us clarify the confusion.
Table of Contents:
- Working principle of split and window AC.
- Energy requirement of Split and Window AC.
- Price difference
- Installation and Maintenance
- Aesthetics
- Conclusion
Working Principle: Simply speaking there is not much difference in the basic working principle of both of them. They consume almost equal energy and give similar cooling.
The major difference is that in window AC, the compressor and blower are put in a single unit, but in split AC the blower unit is put inside the room and the compressor and condenser unit is installed away from it.
Energy Consumption: Technically speaking, energy consumption does not depend on the type of air conditioner. It rather depends on other factors like rotary compressor or inverter compressor, BEE star rating, type of space open or close, etc. So there is no difference in energy consumption between the same tonnage of AC.
Price Difference: If price is a factor for you, then definitely a split AC is more expensive than a window unit.
Installation and Maintenance: Window AC is quite easy to install in comparison to split one. In some cases, you might not even need a professional to install it. It can be installed by an electrician. Split AC on the other hand always needs professionals to install it.
Maintenance wise also window AC needs less maintenance than split AC.
Aesthetics: Here the split AC wins the battle. The window AC looks like a box and in some rooms, does not go easy with the design and decor of the room. Split AC on the other hand can be aesthetically fitted on any wall of the room.
Capacity and Size: One more point where split AC wins the battle is the size versus capacity. If you have a requirement of a bigger tonnage for a bigger area, the window AC would not be able to provide more than 3 ton of cooling. Even for that to be done, the size of AC will need to be increased.
For split AC, the size of the blower need not be increased when increasing the tonnage. Rather you can install a big outdoor unit without the need of changing the internal unit.
You can also install one big outdoor unit and connect it to multiple indoor blowers in different rooms.
Conclusion:
- If your room has sufficient space to fit a window AC, then it is best to purchase this one, but in case if there is no space for window AC or your room is quite big requiring an AC of more than 2 Ton, then it is best to have split one.
- Window ACs are cheaper as compared to the split ones and require less maintenance. The installation of window AC is also easy and does not require any structural changes to your home.
- Split AC on the other hand will require putting wires and ducts through the walls that might require to make slits in walls.
- In case if you have a requirement for more tonnage or want to install multiple indoor units for a single outdoor unit, then split AC is best.
